We surf and explore both the north and south coasts of Durban, seeking out the best spots on a daily basis. Both coasts are the same Indian Ocean with the same surf conditions, divided by the huge bluff that protects the Durban harbour. The south coast offers an abundance of right-hand point breaks, beachies and some reefs. The north coast offers sandy reef barrels and punchy beach breaks as well as the protected Durban bay. They are all world class, and with Dave Renaud as your guide and his lifetime knowledge of where to look and when, you’re sure to score epic and mostly empty waves.
One night is spent in the Ezemvelo World Heritage Site at Umfolozi game park, with an afternoon game drive followed by an epic South African braai right in the Big Five zone. We take turns to protect the meat or the hyenas will swiftly steal it right off the coals. The next morning we do a sunrise drive through the park and head back to your accommodation in Ballito.

The north coast is barrel country, with an abundance of sandy reefs and beach breaks and the Durban bay basin with waves for all abilities and conditions. Ponta do Ouro, the point of gold, is a truly unique African tropical adventure: the point breaks along an 830 metre sand spit offering multiple barrels and leg-burner turns in crystal clear water. Its abundant ocean life and the famous Ponta dolphins, delicious Portuguese-flavour food and vibrant village make up this incredible experience.

Mozambique exclusive

A long drive north to Maputo for a layover, then on to Tofo for five nights. Surf Tofinho point right out front, the slab around the corner and the African Kirra, plus some secret spots and fun beach breaks. The food is excellent: fresh fish, prawns, crab and peri-peri chicken. Tofo is a vibrant seaside village with colourful arts and crafts and crystal clear oceans, home to whale sharks, dolphins and excellent diving.
Back through Maputo and along the back roads through the reserve to Ponta do Ouro for four nights. Here we surf out front on the point of gold, an epic 800 m sand-bottom point offering up barrels and leg-burner turns, with crystal clear ocean, the famous Ponta dolphins and world-class scuba diving and fishing. Ponta is a laid-back, vibrant, culturally incredible seaside town; we also explore some nearby points and beach breaks, and there is a vibrant night life and tons of fun. An early surf on the last day, then the drive back to Ballito for the last night before departure. The trip includes an epic fish and peri-peri chicken braai.
Central Mozambique option: fly directly into Maputo, or to Inhambane via Maputo, and we begin and finish the tour there. Prices stay the same and we include four nights in Pomene, a crazy sand point 4 to 5 hours further up the coast; a fickle wave and difficult to get to, with heavy 4x4 terrain to reach it. Shorter 10 night tours are available.
